8 Limbs of Yoga - Yamas

Yoga Philosophy is something that is overlooked quite frequently in a typical yoga class. All components of the 8 Limbs shows more than just the Poses/Postures. That is one component we will discuss later on.

Introducing you now to the Yamas or the 5 Social Ethics:

  1. Ahimsa is the act of Kindness.

  2. Satya is Truthfulness.

  3. Asteya is Non-stealing.

  4. Brahmacharya is Moderation.

  5. Aparigraha is Generosity.

Ponder in your life how you practice each of the above. I have a friend who is in sales and mentioned to me that he was going to try to stop the “little white lie” for a while. I thought that was an interesting way to begin the aspect of social ethics. Ellen DeGeneres discusses “be kind to one another” at the end of each of her shows. Check in with the space of awareness for yourself.

Anxiety is a feature of fear and without feeling divinely connected the anxiety levels skyrocket and push you upward so far that headaches are frequent and some experience dizziness or vertigo.

The positive connection to the highest chakra is the connection to the Divine. God, Jesus, Archangels, Buddha, whatever terminology feels comfortable to you. For some Nature is their Divine connection (like famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright - did you know Amy is a former tour guide at Taliesin West).

We are all Divinely driven at different points in life, some more than others. Let's find the balance for you that makes you comfortable. Pick a statement below and repeat it throughout your day.

Third Eye Chakra (#6)

As children we have our "imaginary friends" and we talk with them, play teacher to them and as we get older we are told to stop it and not do that.

As an adult we have a tendency to lose track of our "friends" who were there for us so frequently. We each have so much guidance within us but this third eye can get blocked or fuzzy. We learned yesterday about the throat chakra and with that being directly below the third eye - how many times have you been to a spiritual event singing (a rock concert, church, kirtan) and left "buzzing" from this "high" of vocalizing the songs. Then that night you have the most amazing dreams. Congratulations on having a spiritual experience and opening your third eye!

Sixth Chakra Affirmations (third eye):
My life moves with grace
I use my intuition wisely
I see connections and the deeper truth

Voice Chakra (#5)

Do you find yourself swallowing quite a bit and unsure if you should say something? Do you enjoy to sing but found that you aren't as much as you use to?

Let's talk about your throat, your voice, for a moment. We are in an expressive time right now and for some it can be scary. But speaking your truth is something that being taught from a young age has been instilled into Amy.

Also ponder that old phrase, "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never do so." That is also not a true statement. Words toward yourself and words toward others is something that can be very hurtful. Teaching your children from a young age to speak truthful and from a space of kindness will impact so many over the decades.

Heart Chakra (#4)

Healing Touch is an energy based modality that aligns the seven chakras. The reality is we are in charge of our own life, what we feel and think. However things happen; surgeries, an injury, a concussion, verbal abuse that "attack" our outer layers of of energy fields. Until we can start to heal those outer layers the inner [HeartFelt] Center of compassion won't have the ability to heal, forgive or rejoice.

Heart chakra affirmations to feel full of love:

Prenatal Massage FAQ’s

Prenatal Massage FAQ’s

Prenatal massage is a great way for expecting moms to get some reprieve from all the ailments of pregnancy (and there are many).  Here are some common questions surrounding prenatal massage. 

1)       How soon (or late) can I get a massage when pregnant?

With a Certified Prenatal/Postpartum Massage Therapist it is safe to get massage throughout your entire pregnancy up to and beyond your due date.  All therapists at The Nurtured Mama have had additional specific training in prenatal and postpartum massage techniques.   In fact, research as shown that massage throughout pregnancy has been linked to reduced labor times, reduced use of Pitocin and birth interventions and is associated with lower cesarean rates.

 2)      Side lying or Pregnancy Table?

This answer to this question is partially personal preference.  There is a massage table that has holes cut out for the breasts as well as the belly.  The belly is slightly supported with a sling, or mesh material.  Some moms love to be able to lay face down in order to get the “traditional” back massage.  The issue becomes positioning and being comfortable.  The table cannot be tailored to each woman, so the positioning of the breast holes may or may not be comfortable for each woman.  Same with the belly. Because of this, there is a risk of reduced blood flow to the baby.  Lying face down when you are pregnant is not natural.  Moms may not feel comfortable and therefore cannot relax. If mom is uncomfortable, baby is uncomfortable.  From my own experience, my breasts became so large when I was pregnant, there was no way they were going to fit into the holes. 

 The side lying position is superior because it is a more natural way for moms to lie down.  There is no risk of any pressure on any ligaments or breasts.  Using a series of pillows and bolsters, moms are propped on the side.  This also is a great way to reach the hips with firm pressure with no added pressure on the belly.  A therapist trained in the side lying position can also use passive stretching and other techniques to help alleviate common aches and pains in the hips, neck and shoulders.

 3)      How often should I get a massage?

 To maximize the benefits of massage for mom and baby, consistency is most important.  Typically, moms tend to need a massage well before they start complaining of aches and pains.  Starting early can even help prevent symptoms from occurring.  Moms typically begin monthly massages in the second trimester and continue until the baby is born, but as stated earlier, it is safe to get a massage your entire pregnancy.  It is also strongly recommended to plan for a postpartum massage as well.   The first few weeks after birth can be very difficult, and massage can really help moms emotionally.
